Leak measurement in biscuit industry

Packaging leak measurement in biscuits business is a top priority subject because leak measurement improves conservation of the product and helps in optimizing the quantity of matter.

Quality good practices in these sectors forbid water in area of production for hygienic and lowering negative effects on product considerations. As a consequence leak measurement is more useful than leak detection (Bubble Leak Test).

Snacking companies are worried about the crisp of the product, which is damaged very fast in the presence of humidity, particulary if the packaging is drilled. Defects of the envelope and sealings can easily annihilate the barrier property of the film.

The breathability of the packaging is also determining, as shown by a historic French manufacturer testimonial: « For biscuits I needed to determine the level of breathability below which aromas are stacked into the package giving bad smell to consumer at opening. »

HOW TO MEASURE LEAKS AND HOW TO CONTROL THE QUALITY OF THE SEALING?

The technique used by EXOS and OXYLOS allows to control:

  • Strength of the sealing
  • Leak measurement (down to 5µm)
  • Breathability of the packaging
  • The uptake of gas over time for modified atmosphere applications

The reached performances are such as the sensibilities, or detection limit, can go down to 5µm equivalent diameter perforation. as a reminder a bacterium measures 1µm, a hair measures between 40-70µm.

The sensitivity of the device allows to discriminate by experiment, the causes of leak among the following examples:

  • The perforation of the film
  • The best matter for the film vs leak level
  • The quality of the sealing
  • The presence of product in the seals
  • The phenomena of tiredness (creep test)

Thus, the level of sensitivity makes it possible to control the integrity of the packaging which will preserve the atmosphere over time.
